It Is Rocket Science

Nothing exists except atoms and empty space; everything else is opinion. Democritus

For the past month or so, the G5/6 class has been out of our element trying to wrap our atoms around Physical Science.

We started off with an easy question, “How much do you weigh?” “30kg.” WRONG! The correct answer is 294.30 newtons, in this case.
Do you know that we weigh 6 times less on the Moon than we do on Earth because of the difference in gravity? So, eating six Big Macs only counts as eating one Big Mac, right? Welllll, don’t forget, the mass stays the same…and so do calories.
We also learned about why power lines are “longer” in the summer than it is in the winter? In the summer, the wires sag because metal expands in heat.

We know, we know. It’s confusing! However, gradually, our class became solid on this matter and now we are Au-en (Au=gold), aka, golden! Our last action for this unit was launching a pet bottle rocket. We mixed together sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO₃/baking soda) and acetic acid (CH3COOH/vinegar) and saw it shoot high in the air. The chemical reaction? CO2(g) + H2O(l) + Na+(aq) + CH3COO-(aq). Our reaction? Surprised!

Our final opinion: this is an activity that we’d like to do periodically!
