GiS G5 & G6 spent the month of September learning more about the earth on which they live in geography studies. Students learned all about countries, physical geography, human geography and more! As part of their studies of physical geography, students embarked upon the exciting and challenging endeavour of building their very own dioramas of land forms.

The first step in the project was to make the base structure out of Styrofoam. When students were happy with their design, they then covered the structure with homemade Sculptamold (a mix of plaster and paper pulp). Students also made rocks by pouring plaster into bowls made of tin foil. Next, students painted their dioramas using a dry brush technique. Students used a mortar and pestle to grind soil found outside the school to make the earth on the surface of their models. For grass in their landscapes, students used hemp rope and green paint. To add some nice geographical touches to their models, some students bought miniature model trees and other items to add to their diorama. After the works were complete, the students had a photo shoot to document their hard work!

Through this project students learned to work with a variety of new materials and how to use dangerous tools safely. Students learned the value and necessity of planning in a project. Students also learned how to be patient as it was a lengthy activity with many steps and small setbacks along the way.

With volcanoes, canyons, hills, rivers, lakes, ponds, waterfalls, and even an army scene, you can really see the creativity of the students shine through!
